The Department of Welfare for Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes
was established in 24th October, 1970 with the objective of
providing more focused attention on the integrated socio-economic
development of the most under-privileged sections of the Indian
society namely, the Scheduled Tribes (STs) & Scheduled Castes (SCs),
in a coordinated and planned manner. Subsequently it was bifurcated
as Directorate of Welfare for Scheduled Tribes and Directorate of
Welfare for Scheduled Castes in 1982. The Department of Tribal
Welfare is the Nodal Department for the overall policy, planning and
coordination of programmes for development of Scheduled Tribes.
